I Just Wanted to Show You

A film by Caroline Young

Logline: A series of documentary-style videos a young girl sends to her dad over the course of several years.

Act One: The clicks and hum of an old VCR. The starting of a tape. We open on a black screen, hearing the voice of a girl. She’s talking to her dad, introducing the video she’s about to show him. The camera fades into a shot of her in front of a gorgeous view, laughing with friends and showing it off to the camera. The video cuts off after she says “I just wanted to show you.”

Act Two: We wind through old tape. Accompanied by music, several shots play from the girl’s life. Highs and lows, alone and with friends, at home and outside, and everything in between.

Act Three: We see the girl grow older. She gets her ears pierced, she gets her first car, she travels alone for the first time, documenting every step of the way so she can show her dad.

Final Scene: The final shot is of the girl and her friends. A voice behind the camera says “three, two, one,” and the camera cuts to black, leaving us on a cliffhanger. The video is over, but we know the girl’s life goes on.
